Alumni artists bring cheer to local hospital

Beloit Health System has brightened the mood of its hospital’s main stairwell with murals of a tree that depict the Midwest’s four seasons. The multi-floor mural was created by two young alumni artists.

Seeking to commission artists to take on the project at Beloit Memorial Hospital, the health system collaborated with Professor of Art George Williams. In addition to teaching students to become artists, Williams teaches them how to become engaged in the business of art. He put the challenge to his then-students, asking them to propose a scale and budget for the project.

Brooke McCammond’21 and Hannah Kang’22 accepted, creating a proposal, then taking the lead in painting the murals late last spring. As students, both artists were also hired on campus to create original art in selected common spaces of Peet Hall through a recent student-run mural initiative.

In the hospital’s stairwell, Kang and McCammond painted a tree that transitions through the seasons from floor to floor, starting with summer on floors one and two, then moving to fall, winter, and spring.
